Follow Budapest's Danube bank past the Parliament exterior, cross towards Buda and climb or ride up for castle-district views. Finish around the river at dusk when both sides of the city begin to light up.
Venice
See more of Venice by linking Rialto with quieter Cannaregio lanes and the waterfront around Dorsoduro. Give yourself permission to wander: the bridges, small squares and changing canal views are the main event.
Lisbon
Explore Lisbon from Praça do Comércio into Alfama, stopping at public miradouros before returning towards the riverfront. The hills are part of the experience, but trams and lifts can shorten the harder sections.
Prague
Cross Charles Bridge early, explore Kampa and Malá Strana, then return to the Old Town Square through Prague's historic lanes. Most of the experience comes from the streets, views and river rather than tickets.
Rome
A classic Rome route without compulsory tickets: see the Colosseum exterior, use the public viewpoints around the Forum, then walk through the historic centre towards the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain.
Barcelona
Link Barcelona's Gothic Quarter with La Boqueria, the lower Rambla and the seafront. It creates a lively walking day with architecture, market food and open public space instead of a timetable of paid sights.
Krakow
Start in Krakow's Main Market Square, follow the Planty gardens around the Old Town and continue to Wawel Hill and the Vistula riverbank. The route combines major sights with plenty of free space to explore.
Paris
Make Paris feel manageable with a walking day from a Seine viewpoint towards the Louvre courtyards, the Île de la Cité and Le Marais. Choose one district to linger in rather than racing between attractions.
Milan
See central Milan from Piazza del Duomo through the Galleria, into Brera and on to the public courtyards and grounds around Sforza Castle. It is an easy route to adapt around free and paid stops.
Amsterdam
Explore Amsterdam at street level: follow the Prinsengracht through the canal belt, wander the Jordaan and finish in Vondelpark. Add a free ferry from behind Centraal for another view of the city.

A value-focused Dublin day: begin at St Stephen's Green, choose a free national museum or gallery, cross the centre to the Ha'penny Bridge and finish with a walk beside the River Liffey.
Cardiff
Try a central Cardiff loop through the Victorian arcades, past Cardiff Castle and into Bute Park, finishing around the market and independent food spots. Add Cardiff Bay by local train if you have time.
